Explanation of brown color

Everything you need to know about brown color; How to mix, combine and choose the color shades that suit you, given the meanings and effects of different colors

The color brown is a general name for dark shades of orange that are obtained by mixing the primary colors - blue, yellow and red. Unlike other colors, it is not possible to obtain a brown color from monochromatic light but only from a combination of light sources or from a reflection from a surface of a suitable color.

Meanings of brown color

Brown color is the color of the earth, it is a color that conveys confidence, stability, warmth and more.

Pigments of brown color

Natural Sienna. Pigment PBr7.
Fresh Sienna is a shade of yellowish brown, lighter than ocher. Originally a natural oxidized iron.

Sienna is burnt. Pigment PBr7.
Burnt Sienna is a combination of brown with red and the source is natural oxidized iron. Made from fresh Sienna pigment that has been heated in a kiln.

Natural ombre. Pigment PBr7.
Fresh umbra is a shade of greenish brown. Originally a natural iron with the addition of manganese.

Burnt umbra. Pigment PBr7.
Burnt umbra is a shade of cold, dark brown, originally natural oxidized iron, plus manganese that has been heated in a kiln.

Brown color in art - useful tips for painters

In artwork we usually use some particular shades of brown and they are burnt and natural Sienna and burnt and natural umbra and of course more shades.

Coffee brown which is brown with a mixture of white and gray.
Sand brown which is brown mixed with light yellow.
Chocolate brown which is a dark brown combined with a lot of black and a little red.
Earth heat which is a warm heat mixed with red, orange and yellow.
