Tips for preparing a portfolio

Tips for preparing a portfolio

A portfolio comes to represent the artist, his worldview, his lines of thinking and the expressions of his personal authentic feeling and experience - all of these are much more important than high technical skills. Here are tips for preparing a portfolio for entrance exams for the various art institutions.

For admission tests to the various art institutions, among others, architecture, fashion design, graphic design, visual arts, etc., it is necessary to present a portfolio that reflects the creative artist. It is recommended to submit the portfolio inFile and display folder of works of art in A4 size, but also in any other creative way.

It is desirable that the portfolio be voluminous, rich in a variety of different dimensional works. Even if you are an expert in a certain media, it is important that you show mental flexibility and curiosity in discovering new materials. At the same time, clarify the creations, not everything you created should appear. The selected works are pieces that both reflect the creator. It is important that you are complete and aware of the reason behind each choice of work. Do not strive for clear awareness, be open to internal reasons that arise from the unconscious. The most important thing is that you simply be honest in your answer to these questions. Also, it is advisable that you enter recent works, at least from the last two years. Pay attention to visual aesthetics, be creative and show your uniqueness.

Usually, a homework assignment that the school requires on a certain subject should be added to the portfolio. You must create a work of art that expresses the meaning of the chosen subject in any medium, material and size you choose. The subject changes from year to year and in each institution. Example topics: "House", "Island", "Viewpoint", etc. It is recommended to explore the meaning of the word in different layers. Read the dictionary definition of the term and wonder about it both in the physical and material dimension as well as in the emotional dimension, your personal subjective meaning in relation to the life experience you have accumulated and your worldview and not just the dictionary objective meaning.

In the entrance exams there is a practical exam with art materials. For the most part, this is a still life drawing exercise. Still life is a field of art that focuses on describing various objects such as vases, plants and flowers, fruits, household utensils and the like. The artistic expression is created from the choice of objects, their composition and arrangement in space. For this, you must understand where to start and how to build a perspective that will reflect depth in the drawing. Knowledge of drawing is a field of view for both color painting and sculpture. Therefore, it is recommended that the portfolio include a still life drawing that shows your familiarity with the rules and principles of drawing. But even if you don't practice well, don't worry, you will already learn everything you need at the educational institution to which you will be accepted. The main thing is to show experience in practice and above all a desire for learning and development.
