A Female Torso Sculpture Exercise by Alexander Cherkov, from the book Introduction to the World of Art "Sculpture, painting, drawing and more"
An excellent torso sculpture exercise as a preparatory exercise for whole body sculpting, in addition can be used as a sculpture on its own as quite a few examples can be found throughout the history of art.
Step-by-step female torso sculpture exercise
While sculpting the upper body, follow the marked on the human body proportions chart. The total mass or minutes of the chosen female figure is not of significant importance for the performance of the exercise.
Assemble a composition of simple three-dimensional geometric shapes made of clay: 2 large balls, with a short cylinder on them and over 2 smaller balls.
Combine the shapes into one piece as in the illustrations / video in front of you.
Design the shape of the female torso and its parts: neck and beginning of limbs.
Shape abdomen, waist and breasts.
Continue to shape and refine the shape, emphasizing the curves of the female body.
Emphasize the curves of the female body also in the back of the torso: back, shoulder blades and buttocks.
In the above exercise we worked on a realistic female torso sculpture that reflects the anatomical structure. As a continuation of the exercise the sculpture can be taken in a more abstract direction, while preserving the anatomical features of the image.
