Red is one of the three primary colors. The red light is electromagnetic radiation at the lowest wave frequency that the human eye is able to absorb.

Red is a very dominant color and even a small piece in the painting will attract your attention. The complementary color to red is green according to the color wheel.

Meanings of red color

The red is vibrant and full of life, it has a wide range of meanings from love and passion to fiery anger, it is exciting and stimulating. Red is the color of fire, blood, power and danger. Red symbolizes energy, passion, power, courage, creativity and warmth.

Prominent pigments of red color

cadmium red. Pigment PR108.
Cadmium red is a very strong red, warm and opaque. Cadmium itself is a toxic metal but cadmium pigments are not classified as dangerous. The level of soluble cadmium in pigments is so low that there is no need for hazard warnings and no risk.

Red and a million. Pigment PR106.
Vermilion is made of silver. It was the pigment used in Pompeii murals and Chinese lacquer painting starting from the Song dynasty.

Alizrin red. Pigment PR83.
Elizarine was the first synthetic red dye, created by German chemists in 1868.

Scarlet red. PR168.
Scarlet is a bright red color, with a mottled hue but slightly less murmillion orange.

Red was one of the first colors used in prehistoric art. Red color is a basic color and cannot be obtained by mixing other colors. Red color is used to darken and create a shadow on green colored objects, the complementary color to red color.
