Perfect three-dimensional shape

Alexander Cherkov discusses geometric shapes and perfect three-dimensional shape as part of the characteristics of sculptural composition.

A perfect three-dimensional form by Alexander Cherkov, from the book Introduction to the World of Art "Sculpture, painting, drawing and more"

I fully illustrate this section with photographs of Anish Kapoor, As an expression of gratitude to the artist who impressed me.

As a teenager, I got to participate in the Physics Olympics among school students. One of the questions was: "What shape does water have?". Like most participants, I thought whole has the form of a vessel into which they are poured. Turns out I was wrong. After the Olympics, the physics teacher explained that water in a free state has the shape of a sphere, since thus the ratio of surface to volume is minimal. I was reminded of this when I first saw the sculptures by Anish Kapoor.

Characteristics of the sculptural composition: a perfect three-dimensional shape

In nature, anything that is in a free state tends to be in the shape of a sphere. From cosmic nebulae, stars and planets to atoms and electrons. One of the poems of the Russian poet of the twentieth century, Arseniy Tarkovsky (the father of the great director Andrei Tarkovsky) has such a line: "Spherical world space".

And what about the other geometric shapes?

There are many polygons in the plane - triangle, square, pentagon and so on. Circle - can also be displayed as a polygon, in which the number of angles tends to infinity. In three dimensions, their equivalents are polyethers, and a sphere is a three-dimensional shape with an infinite number of sides.

Perfect three-dimensional shape

Shapes with a limited number of angles and wigs are used as multiple schemas and connections of spherical shapes (such as atoms and molecules).

When we return to Anish Kapoor's sculpture, I can not help but express my astonishment at the artist, whose virtuoso sculpture allows us to see through only one basic form - the world of abstract sculpture which has been built into a sphere. Multiple variations of spheres in different sizes, locations, colors and textures create an artistic and philosophical picture of the universe around us.
