Turpentine is a necessary material for oil painting

Oil paints are common in art and have been used for centuries. Oil paintings probably began in Northern Europe during the Renaissance in the 15th century. Working with oil paints is done in layers, with the paint drying between layers. Oil paint does not dry quickly, thus making it possible to create interesting color transitions and gradations. A layer of oil paint will dry within a few days to a week. Oil colors are very concentrated colors, therefore in painting with oil colors, thinners, linseed oil and turpentine are used. These materials help the oil paints to slide easily on the canvas, to mix into desired shades, to control the level of transparency, brightness and opacity of the paint.

It is recommended to mix oil paints with turpentine and linseed oil in a 1:1 ratio, for the first layer of the painting on canvas. Starting with the second layer, only turpentine can be used, when changing from color to color and diluting concentrated oil paints. Turpentine can also be used for color corrections, using a brush or a dipped cloth you can remove color that went wrong during the painting with oil paints. This must be done gently, if you use force to remove the paint, the canvas may be exposed through the layer of paint.

At the end of the painting, the brushes should be cleaned with turpentine and wiped with a cloth, since water is not useful in cleaning oil. The oil paint mixture with thinners can be saved and reused. The color will sink to the bottom of the container and you can continue to use the mixture.
