Tips for working with a nude model

Here are tips for working with a nude model, an excellent practice for knowing the human anatomy and understanding the proportions, in order to achieve full life in the image of the human body.

Here are some tips for working with a nude model, based on extensive experience in model workshops at our studio.

If you want to achieve expression of life in the image of the human body, practice drawing from observing a living body. Knowing human anatomy, proportions, understanding the rules of perspective, drawing from photographs are just tools. The main way to learn is to work with a live nude model. Join groups of artists, and it does not matter to beginners or experienced, or organize such a group yourself.

In conducting classes with a nude model in our studio, we follow the following order:

Part 1 in working with a nude model

5-6 simple poses lasting 8-10 minutes each pose.

It is advisable to change the angle of view by rotating the model so that each participant in the class can see the model from all sides.

Such exercises help to develop the perception of the whole composition.

Part 2 in working with a nude model

A long pose on a particular subject ("sleep," "rest," "thought," etc.) lasting an hour.

This exercise allows for work and accuracy in details and in-depth study of body parts. In an hour, you can practice not only drawing, but also painting and sculpture.

Part 3 in working with a nude model

8-10 dynamic poses lasting one minute each pose.

In this exercise, you must turn off all analysis and thought, act as spontaneously as possible. Such an exercise makes it possible to get a sense of the human body.

And one more tip:

Never start with an outline. Use lines only at the stage of accuracy and corrections, or even try to make drawings using only "wide strokes".

Remember the Rodin's advice In the topic:
"All great artists examine space. It is precisely in the knowledge of volume that their power lies. Remember one thing: there are no lines, there are only volumes. And when you paint, never think about the lines, and focus only on the volume. After all, the volume is the one that controls the outline."
