A few words about El Greco
El Greco (1541-1614), is the name by which the Greek painter, sculptor and architect - Domenikos Theotokopoulos - became famous. The meaning of the name is "Greek", in Spanish with an Italian influence. He did most of his artistic work in Italy and Spain. El Greco was born in Crete and initially trained as an icon painter. He is considered a great master in Crete. At the age of 26, he wanted to expand his artistic horizons and traveled to Venice and Rome, where he studied with Titian. In 1577 he emigrated to Toledo, which was then the ecclesiastical capital of Spain, and there he created his mature works. There he also began a successful career as a painter of altar decorations and portraits. After his death, his works were relatively forgotten. It was only at the end of the 19th century that artists and critics discovered a renewed interest in his unique way of expression. The liberation of form, lighting and color in El Greco's work inspired artists such as Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock in their efforts to change the face of painting in the 20th century.
